Bloomberg CityLab: The tenth Bloomberg CityLab, the preeminent global cities summit organized by Bloomberg Philanthropies in partnership with the Aspen Institute, will bring together global mayors alongside prominent city innovators, business leaders, urban experts, artists, and activists to discuss and discover replicable solutions to pressing issues. Bloomberg CityLab was founded on the principle that the most important innovation is happening at the local level and that global impact can be achieved when cities share solutions.
Session Description: Over the next three decades, data and innovation will be crucial for the sustainable and inclusive growth of African cities. African city leaders will need to innovate rapidly and find radically new ways to use data in order to provide the necessary jobs and amenities for their residents. This session explores the lessons and best practices from this on-the-ground data and innovation revolution that are applicable to cities everywhere looking to beef up these critical city hall skills.

Tuesday, May 29, 2018
Featured on GovEx Data Points, a podcast about government and data.
Racial equity is a challenge cities across America are grappling with on a daily basis. In this episode, we will take a deep dive into the innovative and data-driven approach which Grand Rapids, Michigan is taking to meet this complex issue head-on. Over the past six months, GovEx, through What Works Cities, has been supporting Grand Rapids' efforts to increase racial equity by improving data management practices and bringing data and evidence into the decision-making process, and bettering the connection with residents and their quality of life.
As a part of our collective effort, the City has launched its Housing NOW! dashboard which allows everyone a clear view of the data collected and analyzed by Grand Rapids to "inform decision-making and dialogue so that [the City is] able to understand [its] community needs and how best to meet them."
We are joined by Alex Melton who is the Customer Service Community Liaison for Grand Rapids and Zac Thiel, the City’s Digital and Data Strategist. They are a part of Grand Rapids 311 Customer Service team, which is led by Becky Jo Glover.
